Freshers can apply for caregiver jobs in Japan from India under the Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) Nursing Care pathway if they meet the applicable official requirements and the conditions of the individual job vacancy.
Previous caregiving work experience is not listed as a universal requirement in Japan's official SSW Nursing Care standards. Instead, candidates normally prove their readiness through the required caregiving skill test, Japanese-language tests and employer selection.
Quick answer
Yes. A fresher can apply for SSW Nursing Care if they are at least 18, in good health, meet the required skill and Japanese-language standards, secure an eligible Japanese employer and complete the immigration process. However, some employers may prefer previous experience or specific educational backgrounds.
Can freshers really apply for caregiver jobs in Japan?
Japan's official SSW Nursing Care requirements do not list previous caregiving work experience as a mandatory condition. A fresher can therefore be eligible if they meet the required age, health, skill-test, Japanese-language, employment and immigration conditions.
The Immigration Services Agency of Japan lists the Nursing Care Skills Evaluation Test and the required Japanese-language tests as the main human-resource standards for SSW Nursing Care.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan also states that SSW workers must be over 18, in good health and have the skills needed to work without special on-the-job training.
Important: “Freshers can apply” does not mean “every fresher will be selected.” The Japanese government's SSW rules and an individual employer's hiring conditions are two different things.
Is previous caregiving experience compulsory?
Not as a universal SSW Nursing Care requirement. The official pathway uses a skills examination to confirm that candidates have the required caregiving knowledge and ability. Individual employers can still prefer experienced candidates for a particular vacancy.
Government requirement
Prove your caregiving skill through the applicable SSW Nursing Care requirements. Previous work experience is not listed as a universal entry condition.
Employer preference
A care facility or recruitment programme may prefer experience, a nursing background or other conditions for a specific vacancy.
This means one employer may accept freshers while another may ask for experienced candidates.
What does a fresher need for SSW Nursing Care?
A fresher must meet the same official SSW Nursing Care standards as other first-time applicants. Being new to the workforce does not remove the test, Japanese-language, employer or immigration requirements.

NAVIS HR programme eligibility can be narrower
Meeting Japan's SSW rules does not automatically mean you fit every NAVIS HR opening. Individual employers and programmes can set their own education, age, language, health or experience criteria.
NAVIS HR's current nurse-aide application form includes “No Experience (Fresher)” as a work-experience option and accepts several healthcare and caregiving education backgrounds. However, the exact criteria can change by vacancy. Always check the current opening before applying.
Can BSc Nursing, GNM or ANM Freshers Apply for Caregiver Jobs in Japan?
They may apply where the vacancy accepts their profile. A nursing background can be useful because candidates may already understand basic patient care, hygiene, safety and communication. However, nursing education by itself does not guarantee employer selection or a visa.
BSc Nursing, GNM and ANM candidates still need to meet the applicable SSW Nursing Care requirements unless an official exemption applies.
Also remember that an SSW caregiver role is not the same as working as a licensed nurse in Japan. Read our Nursing Jobs in Japan for Indian Nurses guide for that distinction.
What does a real NAVIS HR candidate journey look like?
Soundarya: GNM graduate from Tiruvannamalai to SSW nurse aide in Japan
Soundarya completed GNM in Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu. After her studies, she explored Japan as a career option and trained with NAVIS HR. Her published journey records 6–7 months of structured Japanese-language classes, followed by the SSW language and nursing-care evaluations, employer matching and arrival in Japan as an SSW nurse aide.
- 1GNM completed
- 2Japanese training
- 3SSW exams passed
- 4Employer matched
- Working in Japan
Important: NAVIS HR's published story does not state whether Soundarya had prior work experience, so we do not label her as a fresher. We include her story because it shows the real preparation path from nursing studies to a caregiver career in Japan.

Japan's official SSW Nursing Care rules do not list a nursing degree as a universal requirement. This means a non-nursing fresher may meet the official pathway requirements. However, the actual job vacancy may still ask for a nursing, healthcare or caregiving background.
Always check two things separately:
- 01
Do I meet Japan's SSW Nursing Care requirements?
- 02
Do I meet this employer's job requirements?
You need both to move forward with a particular job.
How does a fresher prove caregiving skills without experience?
Freshers normally prove the required occupational skill by passing the Nursing Care Skills Evaluation Test. The test exists to confirm that a candidate has the caregiving knowledge needed for the SSW Nursing Care field.
Japan's official SSW Nursing Care page specifically lists the Nursing Care Skills Evaluation Test as the skill standard for the field.
The official 2026 SSW test schedule also includes Nursing Care field examinations in India on scheduled dates. Candidates should always check the latest locations and dates before registering.
Passing the test does not guarantee a job. It proves that you have met the applicable skills-test requirement.
What Japanese level does a fresher need?
For SSW Nursing Care, candidates normally need JFT-Basic at the required level or JLPT N4 or higher, plus the separate Nursing Care Japanese Language Evaluation Test.
Freshers do not receive a lower Japanese requirement simply because they are new to the workforce.
For the exact levels and tests, read our Japanese Language Requirements for Caregiver Jobs in Japan guide.

Suggested preparation sequence for a fresher
If you are starting with no work experience, build your preparation in the right order. Do not try to prepare for everything at once.
- 1
Check the vacancy first
Confirm the education, age and experience criteria before paying for training or exams.
- 2
Build basic Japanese
Start with hiragana, katakana, everyday vocabulary, listening and simple speaking.
- 3
Learn caregiving basics
Understand elderly care, hygiene, mobility, meals, safety and respectful communication.
- 4
Prepare for the required tests
Work toward the Nursing Care Skills Evaluation Test and the applicable Japanese-language tests.
- 5
Practise employer interviews
Be ready to explain why you chose caregiving, why Japan and how you will handle shift work and language learning.
- 6
Review the job offer carefully
Check salary, allowances, accommodation, deductions, working hours and the support available after arrival.
How should freshers prepare before applying?
A fresher may not have work experience, so preparation matters.
- 01Build a strong Japanese foundation
- 02Learn caregiving basics before the skills test
- 03Practise listening and speaking, not only grammar
- 04Understand basic elderly-care duties
- 05Prepare for employer interviews
- 06Learn Japanese workplace etiquette
- 07Understand shift work before accepting a job
- 08Check salary, accommodation and deductions in writing
- 09Keep education and identity documents ready
- 10Be realistic about the physical and emotional side of caregiving
If you want to understand what life after selection may look like, read our Daily Life of an Indian Caregiver in Japan guide.
What can stop a fresher from getting selected?
Being a fresher is not automatically the problem. Selection can depend on whether your profile matches the vacancy, whether you pass the required tests, your Japanese communication, interview performance and the employer's own hiring conditions.
Common practical issues can include:
- Applying for a vacancy that requires a different education background
- Not yet passing the required tests
- Japanese communication that is not ready for the interview
- Not understanding the physical duties of caregiving
- Unrealistic salary or work expectations
Freshers should not chase “guaranteed Japan jobs.” Passing the tests makes you eligible for the pathway; employer selection and immigration approval are separate stages.
